The stock has some scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches. There are a couple of dings in the bottom edge of the grip. There is a thin crack across the rear sling stud hole. The checkering is well defined. The LOP measures approximately 13 1/2” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has scattered light wear, mostly at the heel and toe, with well defined serrations. The stock rates in Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright and the rifling is sharp. There is some scattered light erosion and a few patches of more notable erosion and pitting in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 6 or 7 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 87% of its metal finish. The balance is mostly in scattered minor surface oxidation, there is some more notable oxidation on the bottom metal. The action shows operational wear. There are a few other scattered light marks. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are tool marked with strong slots. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. When in safety the bolt is locked and cannot be cycled. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the installed scope as described above.

Our Assessment: This is a Remington Model 722 from 1955. Remington, like many other gunmakers, had nearly completely ceased production of commercial rifles during WWII to focus on the war effort. They learned valuable lessons during the war about how to produce large volumes of rifles while retaining the quality needed for a rifle that you can trust your life to. After the war, they put these lessons to good use, and the Models 721 (long action) and 722 (short action) were the result. They had everything you needed, nothing you didn’t and despite being inexpensive to manufacture, was nonetheless reliable, durable, and accurate. Many of the innovations of the Model 721/722 would be retained for the now-famous Model 700 rifle. This example is chambered in the zippy .222 Remington “triple deuce” cartridge and retains a decent bore and good mechanics. This should make for a neat addition to a collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
