Our Assessment:   Released in 1966 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the iconic Winchester 1866 “Yellow Boy” rifle.

Now, the Winchester 1866 “Yellow Boy” was a game-changer in the firearms world when it was first released. It was one of the first rifles to use the newly developed brass cartridge, which allowed for faster reloading and increased accuracy. It was also known for its distinctive yellow-brass frame, which is where it gets its nickname “Yellow Boy” from.

So, when it came time to celebrate the 100th anniversary of this legendary rifle, Winchester pulled out all the stops. The Winchester Centennial ’66 Commemorative rifle is a true work of art. It features a high-polish blued finish and a gold-plated receiver and barrel bands. The stock and forend are made of high-grade American walnut with a hand-rubbed oil finish, and the buttplate is made of solid brass.

Markings:  The left side of the barrel is marked “WINCHESTER MADE IN USA”, “30-30”. The right side of the barrel is marked “A Century of Leadership 1866-1966”.  The top of the chamber is marked with a Winchester proof.   The upper tang is marked “WINCHESTER CENTENNIAL ‘66”.  The bottom of the receiver is marked, “89960”.

Barrel Length: 20” Octagonal Barrel,

Sights / Optics:   The front sight is a blade dovetailed to the barrel. The rear sight is a buckhorn elevator leaf sight dovetailed to the barrel.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece smooth wood with a Gold Plated capped forend, straight grip, straight comb, and Gold Plated buttplate. There are no chips or cracks. The frame is 24 Carat Gold Plated with blued hammer, trigger, and lever.  The LOP measures 13.35″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The buttplate some spots where the Brass finish has come off along with some light scratches.  There is a light loose storage mark on the left side of the buttstock.   Overall, the stocks are in about Excellent condition.

Type of Finish: 24 Carat Gold Plated with Blued barrel and parts.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is well defined. There is no erosion in the bore.

Overall Condition:  This rifle retains about 99% of its metal finish. There are a few scattered light marks about the metal from storage within the original packaging over the years. The action shows very light operational wear. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in about Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly.  As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
