Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece walnut with a grooved slide handle, straight grip, straight comb, and steel crescent buttplate. The stocks have some minor nicks, scuffs and scratches, but no notable damage. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 12 7/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has a mottled appearance with some finish and some worn areas gone to a light patina. Overall, the stocks are in Very Good-Fine condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is some scattered minor erosion in the bore with a few spots of more notable erosion. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 8 out of 10.

Overall Condition: The rifle retains about 70% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at all edges. Most of the balance is finish wear in the magazine tube and receiver. The worn areas show some discoloration from oxidation. There are some light nicks and scratches. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with usable slots. The markings are clear. Overall, the rifle is in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box Paperwork and Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1890 pump action rifle was designed by John Browning in the late 1880’s, patented in 1888 and renamed the Model 90 in about 1919. Winchester had asked Browning to design the rifle as a replacement for the rimfire versions of the Model 1873, which had never achieved great popularity. It proved to be the most successful repeating rimfire rifle for general all around shooting ever made by Winchester. Only about 10% of these rifles were chambered in .22 LR which makes this an exceptionally rare piece. This example is in good shape for its age, retaining about 70% of its original metal finish, a strong bore and good mechanics. This should still prove to be a fun plinker, but would also make a nice addition to a Winchester or rimfire collection missing the Model 1890. Please see our photos and good luck in your bidding!
