Markings: The left shoulder of the barrel is marked “338MXLR” and “THE MARLIN FIREARMS CO. NORTH HAVEN, CT. U.S.A. / * * * MODEL 338MXLR – CAL. 338 MARLIN EXPRESS* * *” and is also marked with a “JM” proof at the rear. The right shoulder of the barrel is marked with Marlin’s two-line warning. The left side of the receiver is marked, “91001148”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a brass beaded blade that is dovetailed to a serrated riser which is screwed to the barrel. The rear sight is a U-notch sight leaf with a step riser for elevation. The top of the receiver is mounted with a 4.75” Scope rail for all your favorite sights and optics.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece checkered gray laminate wood with a capped forearm and grip, straight comb, sling stud in the belly and the forearm cap, and a black rubber Decelerator buttpad. There are no chips or cracks. There are some light small scratches on the left side of the handguard and a small scrape at the bottom rear of the buttstock where the stock meets the rubber buttpad. The LOP measures 13.5” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The pad shows light rub wear along the edges. Overall, the stocks are in about Fine condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. There are some very faint and light scratches on the sides of the receiver. The action shows light operational wear. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly and smoothly. The trigger is crisp. The receiver contains a push safety that blocks the hammer from hitting the pin. The lever safety is present and functional. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a Marlin Model 338MXLR lever action rifle made with a 24” round barrel and half length magazine tube. These rifles were manufactured from 2006 to 2009, this example having been made in 2009, the last year of production. The design is based on the original Model 1895 rifle which ceased production in 1915, and was upgraded and brought back into production in 1972. The barrel is chambered in .338 Marlin Express which was designed by Marlin and Hornady to duplicate the venerable 30-06 into a cartridge compatible for lever action rifles. The rifle is in about Fine-Excellent condition with only a few light marks on its surfaces. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. Who wouldn’t want a 30-06 type lever action rifle!?
