Our Assessment:  This Colt Sporter Target Model is an intriguing piece of firearms history, especially when considering its pre-ban status. Produced before the Federal Assault Weapons Ban of 1994, this semi-automatic rifle is essentially a civilian version of the military M16A2, chambered in the popular .223 Remington or 5.56x45mm NATO. Crafted by Colt, a name synonymous with American firearms history, the Sporter Target Model includes features that would later be restricted by the 1994 ban, such as a flash suppressor.

Mechanically, the Sporter Target Model reflects the reliable and robust design of its military cousin. Utilizing the direct gas impingement system, the rifle offers a smooth recoil impulse and excellent reliability when well-maintained. Its barrel length and rifling are optimized for accuracy, and the rifle comes standard with adjustable sights, providing a versatile platform for both casual shooting and more precise applications. Like its military counterpart, the rifle is built with high-quality materials designed to withstand rigorous use, embodying Colt’s reputation for durability.

To sum it up, this pre-ban Colt Sporter Target Model holds a unique position as both a practical firearm and a collectible piece of American gun history. Its features and design mirror a specific period in U.S. legislation and firearms manufacturing, making it a compelling choice for collectors, historians, and shooting enthusiasts alike. Whether you appreciate the pre-ban model for its additional features, its historical context, or its solid performance, it offers a multifaceted appeal that transcends simple categorization. It’s not just a rifle; it’s a snapshot of American firearms culture before legislative changes altered the landscape and it gives opportunity in some restrictive states to own an “assault rifle”.  Please see our photos and good luck on your bid! – L.S.
