SOLD FOR: $2,275

WOA#: WY240209TL014

Make: Colt

Model: Single Action Army

Serial Number: SA47661

Year of Manufacture: 1968

Caliber: .44-40 Winchester

Action Type: Single Action Revolver with Loading Gate

Markings: On the left side of the barrel is “COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY 44-40”. On the top of the barrel is “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.”.

Barrel Length: 7 ½”

Sights/Optics: The front sight is a Quarter-round blade recessed and fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is a square notch in the groove on the top strap of the revolver.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two piece black hard rubber. Original to the gun. At the upper front of each is the classic Rampant Colt in an oval above the familiar American Eagle. Grips are checkered and still sharp. There are some minimal wear marks around the edges that seem to be from handling. The grips rate in about 99% overall condition.

Type of Finish: Colt Blue and Case Color Hardened

Finish Originality: The finish is completely original. No parts have been replaced.

Bore Condition: The bore is blue and bold but requires some cleaning in my opinion, and the rifling is strong and sharp. There is zero erosion in the bore but cleaning will be desired.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 98% of its metal finish. Finish has one smudge handle and an almost nonexistent line on the cylinder; remember this gun was made to be and has been fired. The screw heads are untouched except the backstrap screw in the base of the revolver. This screw has some marring. The markings are correct and the right depth showing no sign of re-blue or buffing. The Markings are Very Good and distinct. Overall, this handgun rates in about 98% condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. Cylinder locks up as desired and safely aligned with chamber on all six cylinder holes. The hammer provides the iconic four clicks that every Colt six-shooter wants to feel. Cylinder removes smoothly. Overall this revolver is in factory working condition. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: Colt has been a mainstay in the firearms industry for a reason, their attention to quality comes above all else. Folks the world over know the name, and it has become synonymous with reliability and beauty. Owning a Colt Single Action Army has long been a dream of many a young boy, and even as older men (once we could afford them) the SAA brings out the kid inside us that still longs to be a cowboy. The 1873 Single Action Army revolver is that iconic piece of art and attitude that we all want to own. Thankfully after WWII Colt was both kind and wise enough to produce a second run (known as the 2nd Generation) so those swept up in the “cowboy craze” of the 1950s and 1960s could own a piece of American art. As if it were pulled straight from the screen of a John Wayne western, this was the gun to own.

This revolver in particular is a beautiful example from 1968. In this writer’s opinion, it is almost excellent. The bore is great, with sharp rifling, and the blue and case color hardened exterior finish is lustrous. The gun is over 50 years old and barely has a smudge. The age makes it C&R ready. Any cowboy or collector would be very pleased to have this as a shining example in their collection. This revolver is chambered in .44-40 Winchester, a popular caliber among cowboys of the 1870s and cowboy action shooters today. The revolver has a 7 1/2 inch barrel which allows for a little extra of that powder to burn. This revolver makes a statement and would be a shining addition to any collection.
