Our Assessment:
As the first shoulder-fired semi-automatic 50 BMG rifle, this rifle has delivered five of the 20 longest sniper kills in history… even if the gun is technically not meant to be a sniper rifle. The Barret M82 was originally adopted into the U.S. military to “smash stuff.” Think knocking out radar dishes and disabling vehicle engines. This is the most “anti-material” semi-auto you could imagine. But now this firearm is known for its long range accuracy and power. The massive muzzle break and excellent internal engineering and the rifle’s nearly 30lbs of metal and polymer means you get a very shootable system.  This particular M82 is an incredibly special gun. With a 4 digit serial number, this rifle is one of 100 rifles delivered straight to the United States Marine Corps in January of 1991 in the buildup to Operation Desert Storm, during which the rifle was deployed both with Marine Scout-Sniper detachments and as attached units in the 1st Light Armored Infantry. The Marines would use their M82s to great effect during the conflict. As described by M82 Operators like Sgt. Eric Poole and Sgt. Khanh Nguyen, the M82 served as an excellent alternative to both mounted weapons like the M242 Bushmaster and heavier AT weapons like the LAW and other AT Missiles. The M82’s performance during Desert Storm as an anti-material rifle aided to guarantee the rifle a long career in the US Armed Forces. The M82 and later variants have been adopted by the Marines and Army, as well as many NATO partners to the United States. In 2005 it was even dubbed one of the top 10 inventions related to the US Army. Outside of military use, the Barrett is also used by various law enforcement agencies as an Explosive Removal device, allowing for the safe disposal of explosives from a distance.
