Our Assessment: The Colt 1851 is a single-action revolver that was designed and produced by the Colt’s Manufacturing Company in the mid-19th century. It was one of the first successful revolvers produced by Colt and was widely used during the American Civil War.

The Colt 1851 was designed by Colt’s chief engineer, Elisha K. Root, and was based on the earlier Colt Dragoon revolver. It was chambered in .36 caliber and had a six-shot cylinder. The revolver featured a distinctive octagonal barrel and a loading lever that was attached to the barrel. It also had a single-action trigger mechanism, which meant that the hammer had to be manually cocked in order to fire the weapon.

The Colt 1851 was popular with soldiers and civilians alike, and it was widely used during the American Civil War. It was also popular with law enforcement officers and was used by many police departments throughout the country. After the Civil War, the Colt 1851 continued to be popular with shooters and was used in many conflicts around the world, including the Indian Wars and the Spanish-American War.

Today, the Colt 1851 is a collector’s item and is highly sought after by firearms enthusiasts and collectors. It is considered an important part of American firearms history and is often displayed in museums and private collections.

This Colt Percussion Revolver was reintroduced in 1971.
