Markings: The left of the barrel is marked “44 WCF”. The top tang is marked “MODEL 1892 / -WINCHESTER- / TRADE MARK REG. IN U.S. PAT. OFF.”. The bottom-front of the receiver is marked with the serial number.

Barrel Length: 20″, Round

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated blade pinned in a slotted base fixed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a Smith Enterprises square-notch buckhorn sight. The sight is folding with a ladder, but the slider is missing from the ladder. The sights are not original to the rifle. The top tang is drilled, tapped and filled for a peep sight (none included).

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are 2-piece smooth walnut with banded forend, straight grip, straight comb, and steel carbine-style buttplate. The stocks have scattered nicks, dings, scuffs and scratches. There are cracks in the right-front of the wrist, the front of the forend on each side, and the bottom-rear of the forend. There are some minor losses around the edges. The LOP measures 12 3/4″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has some light wear and infrequent minor surface oxidation. Overall, the stocks are in about Good condition as refinished.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Refinished. The barrel is not original to the receiver.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is infrequent faint erosion in the bore, mostly at the muzzle-end. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates about 9 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 93% of its current metal finish. The new finish is generally strong. The receiver has some erosion under the finish. There are some light nicks and scratches. There is wear on the left of the receiver from the saddle ring. The left-front of the receiver has a few deeper marks that may be an intentionally applied design. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear, though the caliber marking is roughly applied. Overall, this rifle is in Good-plus condition as customized (see Mechanics).

Mechanics: The hammer can be dropped from half-cock by pulling the trigger. Otherwise, the action functions correctly. The action is also quite smooth, indicating that it has had work done. The trigger has a little creep, but is light. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: This is a custom Winchester Model 1892 Saddle Ring Carbine with a receiver made in 1918. The rifle has a 20″ round after-market barrel chambered in .44-40 Winchester. This rifle is in Good-plus condition as refinished, having had some action work done, but needing the half-cock notch addressed. The action is quite smooth and has likely had some work done. The new barrel’s bore is in good shape. The 1892 is a classic Winchester lever gun, making appearances in a wild array of Western movies and television shows as well as seeing extensive use all across America as a hunting and utility rifle. This rifle should be of interest to the Winchester collectors and should still be a fun shooter. Please see our photos and good luck!
