Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 58, introduced in 1964, marks a significant chapter in the storied history of firearms manufacture by Smith & Wesson. This model was designed to meet the specific needs of law enforcement agencies seeking a powerful sidearm. Chambered for the .41 Magnum cartridge, the Model 58 provided a formidable option that aimed to bridge the gap between the .357 Magnum and the .44 Magnum in terms of power and recoil, a balance that was particularly appealing for police use.

The Model 58 is part of the N-frame series, renowned for its durability and reliability. It features a 4-inch barrel, fixed sights, and was initially offered in a blued finish. Its introduction was part of Smith & Wesson’s response to the law enforcement community’s demand for a revolver that combined manageable recoil with sufficient stopping power for police work. The .41 Magnum cartridge was developed with the same intent, offering a solution that hoped to become the standard in law enforcement; however, it ultimately found a more lasting legacy among hunters and shooting enthusiasts due to its impressive ballistic performance.

Despite the .41 Magnum not achieving widespread adoption in police departments as initially anticipated, the Model 58 has earned a place in firearms history. Its robust construction and powerful chambering make it a favorite among collectors and shooters alike. The Smith & Wesson Model 58 exemplifies the company’s commitment to innovation, responding to the evolving needs of its users while upholding the standards of excellence for which Smith & Wesson is known. Its legacy is a testament to the era of revolver dominance in law enforcement and the ongoing quest for the perfect balance of firepower and control.

This Smith & Wesson Model 58, also known as the Military & Police model, stands out for its unique blend of practical design and artistic embellishment. This particular revolver features full engraving with the addition of a bobcat on the left side of the frame, a choice that cleverly echoes the firearm’s modified bobbed hammer; both the bobcat and the hammer are characterized by their “short tails,” integrating aesthetics with a nod to functionality. The bobbed hammer, a modification revered for its practicality, especially among law enforcement, reduced the risk of snagging on clothing or holsters, facilitating a smoother, quicker draw. This functional alteration, combined with the skilled craftsmanship of the bobcat engraving, elevates the Model 58 beyond a mere tool for self-defense or service use, transforming it into a collector’s item that beautifully marries utility with artistry. Such thoughtful design details make this revolver a testament to the seamless integration of performance and elegance in the world of firearms, appealing to both professionals in law enforcement and aficionados of fine, engraved guns.  Please see our photos and good luck! – L.S.
