Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original to arsenal refurbishment

Bore Condition: The bore is gray and the rifling is sharp. There is light to moderate erosion in the bore.

In this writer’s opinion, this bore rates 6.5 out of 10.

Many military and C&R eligible weapons have bores that will show erosion. This is not only due to age but to the fact that corrosive primers were commonly used in ammunition worldwide. For example, the U.S. used corrosive ammunition throughout WWII. The U.S. military did not begin to phase out corrosive-primed ammunition until the 1950s.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 75% of its metal finish as arsenal refurbished. There are scuffs and scratches throughout the metal surfaces. There is pitting beneath the arsenal refinish on the sides of the magazine. The finish has been worn from the bottom of the magazine. There is wear along the edges of the front sight. The bolt and action show usage wear. The screw heads show moderate use. The markings are mostly clear, though the edges of the “SA” mark are worn. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition as arsenal refurbished.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with an M/28 bayonet and an “SA” marked leather sling.

Our Assessment: The M/28-30 was the fifth iteration of a Finnish domestically produced Mosin Nagant rifle. Though it did still use Russian parts, the M/28-30 utilized a heavier, Finnish produced barrel. While visually similar to the M/28, it featured a completely new sighting system, one that was windage adjustable via a screw. It also had a stronger, non-hinged nose cap and an improved magazine system. The M/28-30 was the model of rifle used by famed Finnish sniper Simo Haya during the Winter War.

This example is from the second to last year of production, before the Finns moved on to the M/39. The stock has been refinished, resulting in some of the marks being almost completely worn away. The metal retains most of its refurbished finish, with some pitting along the sides of the magazine. The bore is in good shape and should make for a good shooter. The markings are mostly crisp with the Civil Guard district number that the rifle was assigned to on the barrel shank. The rifle comes with an M/28 bayonet and a Finnish Army (“SA”) marked leather sling This would fit into any Finnish, Mosin, or Second World War era collection.
