There are several proofs on the front sight.  The top of the magwell is marked “00661” along with a very faint stamp that reads “STEN MK 5” with some letters underneath that I can’t make out as they have mostly faded.

Barrel Length: 16”

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a fixed blade between two protective ears.  The rear sight is a fixed aperture sight.

Stock Configuration & Condition:  This Sten Gun is built with a modern receiver and barrel on a complete MK5 Parts Kit.  The furniture is a true MK 5 Wood buttstock and pistol grip kit.  The buttstock has a sling swivel on the comb and a brass buttplate with trap door for cleaning kit storage compartment.  The pistol grip is wood with finger grooves.  The handguard is an 11.4 inch vented round metal handguard.   The LOP measures 13.2” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate.  The stock rates in about Fine overall condition. There are scratches and compression marks.  The buttplate has some small dents and nicks but is clean of any patina or verdigris.    There are some minor compression marks on the buttstock and forend. There are no chips or cracks.  The buttstock and grip are semi loose to the receiver.  The barrel has a lug for its spike “pig sticker” bayonet.

Magazine Quantity & Condition: One surplus Sten Gun 9mm 32rd magazine in Very Good condition.

Type of Finish:  Black

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows some scratches and spots of paint loss on the receiver and barrel shroud. The screw heads are sharp and pins are unmarred. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics:  The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories:  This rifle comes with a total of one original surplus magazine and an original bayonet and scabbard.  The bayonet rates in Very Good condition.  The scabbard has lost most of its finish.  The markings on bayonet are all but lost.  The base is marked “No.” but the rest of the markings have faded.  There is some light corrosion but nothing that affects structural integrity.  The point is sharp and the latch spring is strong with strong lockup on the bayonet lug.

Our Assessment:  Say hello to the gun that many say saved Great Britain as the country stood alone against the raging wave that was Germany and its war machines. Designed by Major Reginald V. Shepherd and Harold Turpin for Britain’s Royal Small Arms Factory Enfield, the weapon’s name came from the first letter of each mans’ last name, and the first two letters from Enfield—STEN. Chambered in 9mm, it could use captured German ammo and was cheap to produce (it cost $10 vs the Thompson’s $200 to manufacture). Though it wasn’t winning any long distance competitions, it got the job done and made history doing it. In 1944, Britain’s Royal Arms decided to make a few changes with quality more in mind over the quantity of the quickly produced Sten II’s.  The result was a model that took twice as long to make and cost a bit more, but the increased attention to detail and quality resulted in a much more reliable firearm worthy of the British Army– The Mark V.  Featuring its distinct wood buttstock and rear pistol grip, the clunky Sten Gun became a pretty good looking firearm and a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield.    These days, it’s a little harder to get one’s hands on a functioning Sten gun, so the next best thing is an original Mark & Part kit assembled on a functioning receiver.  MK Gun Mods may be hard to find any info on, but the manufacturer built a few unique firearms in their day similar to this as well as other contraptions like an AR15 Sten Gun Frankenstein pistol.  These firearms are scarce and few and a functioning MK V Sten model like this in beautiful condition is a great find.  Please see photos and good luck!
