Action Type: Bolt Action with Internal Magazine Fed By Stripper Clips. The magazine has a hinged floorplate.
Markings: The left side of the receiver is marked with the serial number “1058792” and the Tokyo arsenal mark. The top of the receiver has the scrub mark from where the Chrysanthemum was removed and the Japanese Characters for Type 38. The barrel is marked with a triangle circle and an “S” stamped proof mark. The Bolt handle and extractor are both marked with “792”. The bayonet is marked with a manufacturing stamp and serial number.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is an inverted V dovetailed into protective wings. The rear sight is an open v-notch with a flip up v-notch ladder sight for long range with markings from 5 to 24.
Stock Configuration & Condition: This rifle has a wood semi pistol grip, straight comb rifle stock with a finger grooved forend. The stock includes a bayonet lug, two sling rings and metal butt plate. The wood has scratches and compression marks throughout the surface of the stock. The right side of the butt has a small chip that has been colored with stain. The metal butt plate is covered with surface scratches and has lost the finish toward the top and bottom of the heel. Overall the stock rates in Good Condition for C&R.

Bore Condition: The bore is gray and the rifling is well defined. There is erosion in the grooves of the rifling. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 7/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. The exposed barrel is very clean with finish loss only from the bayonet and one small impact mark. The receiver has some surface scratches and the rub mark from the MUM removal. The bolt and inside of the receiver have finish loss on the friction points. The bottom metal has some faint surface scratches and some minor pitting. The screwheads show use with serviceable slots. The markings are mainly clear. Overall this rifle is in Very Good condition for C&R.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes an early pattern type 30 bayonet.
Our Assessment: The Arisaka Type 38 rifle is a bolt-action rifle that was used by the Imperial Japanese Army from 1905 to the end of World War II. It was designed in 1905 by Colonel Arisaka Nariakira, and was produced by several Japanese arsenals. The Type 38 rifle fired the 6.5x50mm Arisaka cartridge, and had a five-round internal magazine. It had a simple but sturdy design, and was known for its reliability and accuracy. The rifle also featured a “mum” symbol on the receiver, which was the Japanese imperial seal and indicated the rifle was property of the Emperor. The Type 38 saw extensive use during World War II, both in the Pacific theater and in China. It was also used by various other countries, including Thailand and the Philippines, after the war. Today, the Arisaka Type 38 carbine is a collector’s item, valued for its historical significance and unique design. It serves as a tangible artifact of Japanese military history and is studied by firearms enthusiasts and historians interested in the weapons used during the conflicts of the early 20th century.
