Type of Finish: Nickel Plated

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition:

Rifle:  The bore is bright and the rifling is defined though a bit worn. There is some mild erosion throughout.  In my opinion it rates 6/10.

Pistol:  The bore is semi bright.  There is thick corrosion taking up about 30% of the surface area.  The rifling is defined.  The bore rates 4/10 and should clean up some with a thorough cleaning.

Most antique firearms have bores that will show erosion.  This is not only due to age but also to the of black powder.  When fired, black powder reacts corrosively.  NRA Antique Firearm Conditions Standards are quite lenient for bores.  In some cases, the NRA standards disregard the bore’s condition for collectors’ firearms.

Overall Condition: Both firearms retain about 50-60% of their original nickel finish.  There is spotted corrosion throughout and a deep patina on all of the non-nickel plated parts. There is general operation wear.  Overall these rate in Good condition for C&R and Antique.

Mechanics: The actions function correctly. Both have solid barrel lockup with no play.  We did not fire them. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: Step into the world of classic American firearms with the J.Stevens A&T Co. No.1 Rifle and No. 35 Pistol, a pair that echoes the rich history and craftsmanship of late 19th and early 20th-century gun-making. This dynamic duo, chambered in the versatile and time-honored .22 Short and Long Rifle calibers, represents not just pieces of history, but a legacy of innovation and precision.

The J.Stevens No.1 Rifle, affectionately known as the “Tip-Up Rifle,” is a marvel of simplicity and accuracy wrapped in a single-shot design. Its distinctive tip-up action, where the barrel elegantly hinges upward for loading, harks back to an era of thoughtful mechanics and hands-on engagement with every shot. Available in the plinking-friendly .22 caliber, this rifle was a favorite for target shooters and small game hunters alike. The charm of the No.1 lies in its straightforward operation combined with the timeless joy of shooting the .22 – a caliber as American as apple pie.

This little legend, also embracing the .22 Short and Long Rifle cartridges, was the epitome of personal defense and casual marksmanship in its heyday. The pistol’s tip-up design mirrors that of its rifle counterpart, offering a user experience steeped in the art of shooting. Balancing perfectly in hand, the No. 35 was the go-to choice for those who appreciated the finesse and agility of a well-made pistol.
