Our Assessment: Hey there, Garand Thumb here, and today we’re diving into a unique firearm that might just pique your interest—the Armi Jager AP85. Now, this particular rifle has a bit of a cult following, and for good reason. So, let’s break it down.

The Armi Jager AP85 is a semi-automatic rifle that draws inspiration from the renowned French FAMAS (Fusil d’Assaut de la Manufacture d’Armes de Saint-Étienne). It’s chambered in the ever-popular .22LR cartridge, which means you can plink away without breaking the bank on ammo.

What sets the AP85 apart is its unique appearance. It embraces the bullpup configuration, meaning the action and magazine are located behind the trigger group. This design allows for a compact overall length while maintaining a standard rifle barrel length.

The rifle’s overall profile is defined by its futuristic lines and a distinctive carrying handle that’s integrated into the upper receiver. The AP85’s design closely mirrors the aesthetics of the FAMAS, making it a visually striking option for those looking for something out of the ordinary.

In terms of operation, the AP85 utilizes a blowback system. This means that the force generated by firing a round is used to cycle the action, providing a reliable and straightforward method of operation.

One notable feature of the AP85 is its detachable magazine, which is often curved to match the rifle’s unique shape and tapered rounds.  This allows for extended shooting sessions without frequent reloads.

The AP85 boasts a comfortable pistol grip and an ergonomic design that enhances maneuverability. Its bullpup layout contributes to a balanced feel and makes it well-suited for close-quarters shooting or navigating tight spaces.

When it comes to sighting options, the AP85 typically features a set of open sights. It often comes equipped with a rear aperture sight and a front sight post, allowing for quick target acquisition and engagement at shorter ranges. While these iron sights may not provide the precision of a magnified optic, they are practical and effective for close to medium-range shooting.

It’s worth noting that the Armi Jager company is no longer in operation as of 1993 making this a Pre Ban rifle and a rare one at that as these were the last of their run with limited production numbers.

So, if you’re in the market for a rifle that stands out from the crowd, with a design reminiscent of the legendary FAMAS, the Armi Jager AP85 might just be the one for you. Its unique appearance, reliable performance, and chambering in the versatile .22LR cartridge make it a compelling choice for plinking or recreational shooting.
