Our Assessment: The Valmet M71/S is a highly esteemed semi-automatic rifle of Finnish origin, stemming from the well-regarded family of Valmet firearms. Manufactured by the Finnish company Valmet, it is designed around the Kalashnikov operating system but introduces several improvements and refinements that make it distinct from its Soviet precursor. Chambered in .223 Remington or 7.62×39 (this being in .223), the M71/S provides options for various types of shooters, whether they prioritize ammunition availability or performance.
One of the standout features of the M71/S is its build quality. Unlike many other Kalashnikov variants, the Valmet rifles are known for their excellent fit and finish, featuring milled receivers for enhanced durability and accuracy. The M71/S comes with a mix of wood and polymer furniture giving it a unique appeal. Many users appreciate its relatively lightweight design, as well as the smoother action, which most consider an exceptional improvement over standard AK models.
In conclusion, the Valmet M71/S is a rifle that marries the reliable functionality of the Kalashnikov system with Finnish craftsmanship and engineering. Its superior build quality, combined with its unique features set it apart in a crowded market of AK variants. For those interested in a blend of historic significance and top-tier performance, the Valmet M71/S stands as a compelling and noteworthy firearm.
