Our Assessment: The Tec-9 was developed by a guy named George Kellgren, who founded Intratec back in the late 80s. It was supposed to be a lightweight, affordable pistol for civilians and law enforcement, but it quickly gained attention for its high-capacity mags and that distinctive submachine gun look.

Now, the Tec-9 had its fair share of controversies. It was notorious for its quality control issues, and it got linked to crime due to its use in some high-profile mass shootings in the 90s. That led to legal challenges, with attempts to ban it as an “assault weapon” in the U.S. The 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban actually included the Tec-9 in its banned firearms list, but that ban expired in 2004, and the Tec-9 remained legal for civilian ownership.

But wait, it doesn’t end there! Intratec faced financial troubles, changed ownership a bunch of times, and eventually went bankrupt in 2001. The rights to the Tec-9 were then acquired by Cobray, which later became Leinad Inc. They produced some modified versions of the Tec-9 under different names, but they faced their own legal challenges and eventually went out of business.

That’s the lowdown on the Tec-9, guys. Love it or hate it, it’s definitely had a controversial history in the firearms world. But that controversial and preban status has made it a highly collectable item.  Please see our photos, specs below, and good luck on your bid!
