Our Assessment: Norinco is renowned in the world of firearms not only for arming criminals in the U.S. with rocket launchers, they are also known for reverse engineering some of the most superb firearms ever devised. Manufactured on the same assembly lines as their military, Chinese made rifles boast some of the highest performing and reliable firearms on the market. Since all Norinco’s were import banned in 2003, the remaining firearms in the U.S. have stood the test of time. I thought this was a Valmet at first. “If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it’s a duck” line of thinking doesn’t apply with Norinco. This looks like a Valmet, feels like a Valmet, charges like a Valmet, but don’t be deceived, it’s a really well made Norinco clone of the Valmet 88 Hunter. But don’t let that discourage you, Norinco’s like these have passed into the realm of very rare firearms as very few were ever imported and their banned status means the short supply will only dwindle in time. Who doesn’t like an appreciating asset? Some guns are just pretty, some are just utilitarian, but this rifle is both. Designed for the civilian hunting and sporting market and based on Valmet’s popular line of Kalashnikov style rifles, this Hunter 90 based on the 88 Hunter is made for hitting the mark. Markings: The left side of the receiver is marked, “386” within an oval and “MODEL HUNTER 90 CAL 7.62X39MM SEMI-AUTO”. The left side of the top cover is marked, “0046”. The bolt is marked, “0046”. The side of the scope mount is marked. “CHINA 80”. The left side of the scope is marked, “3-9X22” and the objective lens is marked, “W39 X32V TA WAN AT-65 3”. The right side of the receiver is marked, “S F”. The bottom of the barrel is marked, “INTERSTATE ARMS BILLERICA, MA”. The top of the receiver is marked, “0046”. The left side of the receiver just above the mag release lever is marked “MADE IN CHINA”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is partridge blade dovetailed to the top of the gas block. The rear sight is an adjustable peep sight. The left side of the receiver is mounted with a scope mount and the mount is currently equipped with a 3-9X22 Scope. The sight picture is clear. The reticle is slightly blurred.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is checkered wood with a rubber buttpad, traditional checkered pistol grip, straight comb, and sling swivel in the bottom of the buttstock. The left side of the gas block has a sling ring. The stocks show little to no wear, the checkering is crisp and the peaks mostly sharp. There are two spots on the left side of the pistol grip that have the checkering chipped out. The LOP measures 13.85″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition. There are no chips or cracks.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light scratches throughout the receiver and some thinning in the blued finish in scattered areas. Where the pistol tube meets the receiver there is a patch of corrosion as some more light scattered signs of corrosion throughout the receiver and on the scope mount. The screwheads are sharp and the pins are serviceable. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
