Markings: The left side of the receiver is marked “Remington / TRADE MARK / MODEL 17 / 60451”. The left side of the barrel is marked “REMINGTON ARMS CO., INC., REMINGTON ILION WORKS, ILION / N.Y. MADE IN U.S.A.BROWNING’S PATENT JUNE 15, 1915.”, “60451”, “FULL”, “BY”, “CX”. The right side of the chamber has two chambers.

Sights / Optics: The top of the barrel has a fixed bead at the muzzle end on the serrated solid rib.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece walnut with semi-pistol grip, straight comb, checkered pump grip, and orange vented rubber buttpad. There are no chips or cracks. There are some minor compression lines, scratches, and minor scrapes scattered about. The LOP measures 14″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. Overall, the stocks are in Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The smooth bore is bright. There is no erosion in the bore. There is some minor fouling at the chamber. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9/10.
Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 70% of its metal finish. The edges have thinning and finish loss. The barrel has some scattered light scuffs throughout the finish. There is erosion around the muzzle. The magazine tube and pump arms have some finish loss from operational wear. The screw heads are sharp to lightly worn with strong slots. The extractor spring is strong. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun is in about Very Good condition as C&R.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Remington Model 17 is a 20-gauge pump-action shotgun that holds a unique place in American firearms history, revered for its innovative design and effectiveness in the field. Introduced in the early 20th century, around the 1920s, and produced until the early 1930s, the Model 17 was developed based on John Browning’s patents, which were also the basis for other iconic shotguns like the Ithaca 37. Its distinctive features include a bottom ejection and loading mechanism, making it an appealing choice for both right-handed and left-handed shooters by eliminating the distraction of spent shells being ejected to the side.
The Model 17’s lightweight and balanced design, combined with the smaller gauge, made it an excellent shotgun for upland game hunting, where ease of carry and quick handling are paramount. Its smooth pump-action operation and reliable performance cemented its reputation among hunters and sportsmen of the era.
