Our Assessment:  The Remington Nylon 66 represents a groundbreaking moment in firearm history, being one of the first rifles to extensively use synthetic materials in its construction. Introduced in 1959, it was named for the DuPont Nylon 66 polymer that was used to form the stock and receiver cover, setting it apart from the traditionally wood-stocked rifles of the era. Chambered in .22 Long Rifle, it was designed for casual plinking, small-game hunting, and basic target shooting.

What truly makes the Nylon 66 interesting is its construction. The rifle has no receiver in the traditional sense; instead, the barrel and action are bedded directly into the polymer stock, providing an ingenious method of cost-saving during manufacturing while maintaining structural integrity.  Functionally, the rifle is a blowback-operated, semi-automatic design with a tubular magazine generally holding 14 rounds and located in the buttstock. The Nylon 66 earned a reputation for ruggedness and reliability, often being praised for its ability to function reliably even when exposed to harsh conditions like mud and rain.

In summary, the Remington Nylon 66 is a seminal design that foresaw the industry’s shift towards synthetic materials. Its unique construction and innovative use of materials make it a fascinating piece for collectors and a reliable option for casual shooters. Its lightweight, rust-resistant, and durable design catered perfectly to its intended use, and its influence can be seen in the numerous polymer-framed firearms that have followed.  Please see our photos and good luck! – L.S.
