Our Assessment:The Romanian FPK Dragunov, commonly referred to as the PSL (Pusca Semiautomata cu Luneta), is a semi-automatic sniper rifle that has carved its niche in military history. Despite often being mistaken for the Soviet SVD Dragunov due to its visual similarities, the PSL is a distinct design that originates from Romania. Developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the PSL was built to fulfill the need for a long-range precision rifle within the Romanian armed forces and has been used extensively since.

The PSL operates on a gas-operated action and is chambered for the 7.62×54mmR cartridge, the same round used by the SVD and older Mosin–Nagant rifles, allowing for considerable hitting power at extended ranges. Distinguished by its long barrel and characteristic side-mounted scope, the rifle is designed for high accuracy over long distances. Its laminated wood stock and stamped steel receiver are both elements adapted to withstand the rigors of military use, ensuring reliability and durability. The standard optic for the PSL is the PSO-1-style scope, which is effective for identifying and engaging targets at range.

Romanian FPK Dragunov rifles have seen widespread service not only within Romania but also in various conflicts around the globe, often exported to countries aligned with the Warsaw Pact and others. The PSL’s presence in these environments underscores its effectiveness as a marksman’s weapon. For collectors and enthusiasts, the Romanian FPK Dragunov represents an interesting variation of the precision semi-automatic rifle, combining the iconic features of the Soviet-designed sniper rifles with unique Romanian modifications. Its historical significance and proven battlefield utility continue to make it a sought-after piece among military firearm collectors. It’s a rugged and reliable design that you want in your collection! Please see our photos and good luck on your bid! – L.S.
