Our Assessment: The SKS, or Samozaryadny Karabin sistemy Simonova, is a semi-automatic carbine developed in the Soviet Union in the late 1940s. It was designed by Sergei Gavrilovich Simonov as a replacement for the Mosin-Nagant bolt-action rifles. Adopted in 1949, the SKS became widely produced and distributed, serving as a bridge between bolt-action and fully automatic rifles.

The SKS features a short-stroke gas piston system and a 10-round detachable magazine loaded with 7.62x39mm ammunition. It saw action in conflicts like the Korean War and Vietnam War and gained popularity among civilian shooters and collectors due to its reliability and affordability.

Over the years, different countries produced variations of the SKS with modifications like different barrel lengths, folding stocks, and detachable magazines. Despite the variants, the core design and principles have remained consistent. Today, the SKS continues to be a sought-after firearm for its historical significance and availability, attracting enthusiasts and collectors worldwide. This Russian SKS is a wonderful example with a strong bore and mechanics and has many range days ahead of it. Please see specs below and good luck!
