Our Assessment:  The C&R Grade C Factory Engraved J.M. Marlin Model 1898 Slide Action Shotgun is a fine example of Marlin’s early venture into the pump action shotgun market, aimed at competing with Winchester’s offerings at the turn of the 20th century. Manufactured in New Haven, Connecticut, between 1898 and 1905, this model marked Marlin’s entry into commercially sold shotguns, produced during a period when the company sought to expand its product range beyond lever-action rifles.

The Model 1898 was designed to offer a lighter alternative to the Winchester 1897, featuring an exposed hammer, takedown frame, and a receiver reminiscent of Marlin’s larger caliber rifles, providing shooters with a clear, flat-top receiver sight line for improved accuracy. With an estimated production of 55,000 units over seven years, the Model 1898 showcases Marlin’s commitment to quality and innovation in firearm manufacturing.

What sets this Grade C Factory Engraved model apart is its exquisite scroll engraving with zig-zag bordering, and a detailed oval panel depicting ducks in a marsh scene on the left side of the receiver, complemented by scroll engraving and two doves in flight on the right side. These artistic embellishments not only enhance the shotgun’s aesthetic appeal but also reflect the craftsmanship and attention to detail that Marlin invested in its high-grade firearms.

The Marlin Model 1898, with its blend of functionality, craftsmanship, and artistry, remains a coveted piece for collectors and historians, embodying the spirit of innovation and competition that defined the American firearms industry at the dawn of the 20th century. Its historical significance, coupled with its decorative and mechanical features, makes it a remarkable piece of American gunmaking heritage.  Please see our photos and good luck on your bid!  – L.S.
