Action Type: Hammered SxS Side-lock Percussion Shotgun.

Markings: The sides of the frame are marked, “HARKOM” with fine engraving. There is Engraving throughout. The barrels are marked, “JOSEPH HARKOM – EDINBUROUGH” The bottom tang is marked, “199” There is a Spaniel head on the top of the frame.

Barrel Length: 29 1/4”

Choke: .705” / .707”

Sights / Optics: This shotgun is mounted with a single forward bead sight.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a single piece hand checkered grade 4 walnut with a straight comb, straight wrist, engraved steel buttplate. The checkering is sharp. There are faint pressure dents and scratches throughout. The LOP measures 14.5” from the front trigger to the rear of the buttplate. The stock rates in at about Excellent overall condition. The stock is cast for a right handed shooter.

Type of Finish: Oil dipped damascus, White Steel.

Finish Originality: Refinished with a clear protective coat.

Bore Condition: The bores are very bright.  There is some faint fouling throughout. In this writer’s opinion the bores rate at about 9.5/10, especially for its age.

Overall Condition:  This shotgun retains about 99% of its metal finish. The barrel has gone to a light patina. The steel frame and forend have aged nicely. There are faint nicks on the barrel. The markings are mostly clear. Overall, this shotgun rates in about Excellent condition for a firearm of its age.

Mechanics: The action functions as intended. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards. The hammers function flawlessly.

Our Assessment: Joseph Harkom of Edinburgh Scotland is a renowned firearms maker during the mid-19th century. He was known for producing high quality, finely engraved shotguns from percussions to box and side lock break actions in later years. This shotgun has a fantastic ribbon damascus barrel and ramrod loops, with a nicely engraved hammered side lock action. The grade 4 walnut stock is of quality make with only minor handling wear. The forend even has a pineapple shaped endcap. The checkering is sharp. This firearm has a clear protective coating throughout to keep this firearm in good condition.
