Our Assessment: The Smith and Wesson Model 500 is a large frame revolver that has earned a reputation as one of the most powerful production revolvers in the world. The X-Frame on which it is built was specifically designed to handle the massive amount of muzzle energy and pressure generated by the .500 S&W cartridge, a feat that was not possible with S&W’s existing frame designs. The manufacturer markets the Model 500 as “the world’s most powerful handgun.”
The Model 500 has the ability to fire a 350 gr bullet at an impressive velocity of 1975 ft/s, which results in a muzzle energy of over 3,030 foot-pounds and a momentum of 13.7 Newton seconds. Additionally, the Smith & Wesson .500 Special, a shorter cartridge, is fully compatible with this revolver. The Model 500 features a unique barrel design, using a rifled tube inside a barrel shroud that is tensioned from the front for stability and accuracy, making barrels cheaper to produce and providing a more accurate shooting experience.
The revolver’s advanced design helps counter the recoil felt by the shooter, including its weight, the use of rubber grips, a forward balance, and a compensator. The Model 500 also boasts a secure lockup mechanism, which is achieved through a centerpin at the rear of the cylinder and a ball detent in the frame.

Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “500 S&W MAGNUM” and the right is marked “SMITH & WESSON”. The side plate has S&W’s monogram logo, the right side of the frame is marked “500 ES MADE IN U.S.A. MARCAS REGISTRADAS SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MASS.”. The inside of the crane and groove is marked, “DAM5449 MOD 500 638”. The left and right side of the grips are marked with the Smith and Wesson Logo.
Barrel Length: The barrel is 2 3/4″ with a solid rib and underlug.
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a black serrated ramp blade that is pinned to a rise in the barrel’s solid rib; the top of the rib is serrated and matte finished for glare reduction. The rear sight is a flat top, square notched and white outlined leaf in a micrometer-click adjustable base.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are Hogue pillar-bedded orange rubber overmolded with S&W logo medallions. The pillars are strong with no wear. The grips rate in about Excellent overall condition.

Finish Originality: Factory Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 99.9% of its metal finish. The screw heads are sharp with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Excellent condition. The cylinder has a thin drag line. This pistol looks to have been stored well for most of its life.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly with very light side-to-side play in lockup. This pistol has excellent lock up and crisp smooth trigger pull and action. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The pistol comes with a large Vortex brand pressure sealed orange survival case, with a waterproofing gasket and foam inner liners. The lid’s foam has two cutouts for the unopened survival blankets and Bear Attacks of the Century, from Smith & Wesson; two keys for the pistol’s internal frame lock system, a whistle, compass, mirror, rope saw, test cartridge, wax paper, factory lock, keys, owner’s manual, group of factory paperwork, sheet of wax paper and Morgan A. Taylor Smith & Wesson Extreme Ops folding blade knife / its nylon pouch, are all provided; the book and wax paper have some permanent creases, the other items are in like new condition. The knife blade is 4 1/2″, OAL is 10. The blade is part serrated with a spear tip point, it is VERY heavy duty and the cutting edge is factory sharp. The blade is Titanium 440 Steel, it is marked “HAMMER FORGED / SURGICAL CHINA / CK42BS”.
