Markings: The barrel rib is marked “SMITH & WESSON / SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A.”, “MODEL OF 91”, and “PAT APR. 20. 75. FEB. / 20. & DEC. 1877. MAY. 11. 90.”. The frontstrap is marked “19537”. The underside of the barrel latch is marked “19537”.  The right of the frame is marked with an S&W monogram logo. The left side of the grip frame is marked “B” and diamond, and “1.59” indicating that this pistol was refinished by Smith & Wesson in January of 1959.  The left grip under the monogram is marked “PAT’D AUG.30.92”.

Barrel Length: 10″

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade pinned to the barrel rib.   The rear sight is a square flat top square notch that is integral to the barrel latch.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are accurate to the model.  The grips are two piece checkered hard rubber extension target stocks with smooth borders, two screws, S&W Monograms at the tops, and smooth diamonds around the grip screws.  There are a few scattered light marks and compression lines. There are some marks on the bottom edges. Overall, the grips are in about Fine condition as C&R. There are no chips or cracks.

Type of Finish: Blued, Case Hardened trigger and hammer.

Finish Originality: Refinished by Smith & Wesson in 1959

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp.  There is some minor scattered erosion and pitting.  In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 8/10 for C&R, possibly antique.

Overall Condition: This pistol retains about 90% of its metal finish.  The balance of the finish shows a beautiful, strong, and deep blued finish throughout with a few spots of wear.  The top of the barrel in front of the barrel latch has some wear that has worn to white with scattered oxidation and erosion.  The same pattern of wear can be found on the sides of the barrel at the muzzle.  There are other very faint and thin scratches on the barrel exterior and frame.  The pinheads are unmarred. The screw heads are sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, the pistol is in about Excellent condition as C&R.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this pistol. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson .22 Single Shot 1st Model, also known as the “.22 Single Shot Model 1891,” is a remarkable firearm, showcasing a 10″ barrel adorned with the distinctive “Model of 91” roll-marking. This exquisite piece retains an impressive amount of its original factory bright blue finish, notwithstanding some minor flaking near the barrel latch and slight, aged corrosion near the muzzle. The bore shines brightly, boasting sharp rifling indicative of meticulous care and maintenance. Mechanically, the pistol operates flawlessly, with every component functioning as intended. Notably, this firearm was returned to the factory in January of 1959 for a refinishing, a fact confirmed by the “1.59” and “B” stamps on the left grip frame, highlighting its pristine factory finish, impeccable roll-markings, and perfectly domed frame pins. The attention to detail in its restoration is unparalleled, making it a standout piece.
