Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 586-3 is a classic revolver that holds a special place in the lineage of Smith & Wesson’s famed L-frame revolvers. Introduced as a part of the 586 series, which debuted in the 1980s, the “-3” designation in the model number refers to the third engineering change or revision to the original design. The 586 series, including the 586-3, is chambered for the .357 Magnum cartridge, a choice that offers both formidable stopping power and versatility, as the revolver can also comfortably fire the less powerful .38 Special rounds.

The Model 586-3 is distinguished by its solid frame and a full underlug barrel, which not only adds to the revolver’s aesthetic appeal but also serves a practical purpose. The additional weight of the underlug helps to balance the revolver and reduce the recoil felt when firing .357 Magnum cartridges, making it more manageable and accurate for shooters. Typically outfitted with a 4-inch or 6-inch barrel, the 586-3 is versatile for both duty use and recreational shooting.

This model is known for its exceptional build quality and reliability, traits synonymous with the Smith & Wesson brand. This 586-3 features a nickel finish, giving it a classic yet modern and elegant appearance. Its ergonomic design, including a comfortable grip and a smooth double-action trigger pull, makes it a favorite among revolver enthusiasts. The 586-3, like other revolvers in the 586 line, is highly regarded for its precision, durability, and classic design, making it a prized possession for collectors and a reliable choice for those seeking a high-quality revolver for personal defense, target shooting, or law enforcement use.  Please see our photos and good luck on your bid!  -L.S.
