Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “44 W.C.F.”. The top of the barrel is marked “CIMARRON FIREARMS CO. FREDERICKSBURG TEXAS U.S.A. PAT. JULY 10. 60”. The rear of the cylinder is marked “.44 WCF / CS0623 / IT2021” with a Uberti Proof. The bottom of the grip frame is marked “CS0623”.

Sights/ Optics: The front sight is a semi-circle blade fixed at the muzzle. The rear sight is a rectangular notch integral to the barrel latch.
Stock Configuration & Condition/ Grip: The grip panels are two-piece smooth walnut. There are a few small scratches and nick on the bottom of the left grip. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grip panels are in Excellent condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: The revolver retains about 99% of its metal finish. There are some light handling marks and minor operation wear but the pistol lacks any notable defects. The turn line is intermittent and crisp. The markings remain clear. The screwheads are unmarred and serviceable. Overall, the revolver is in Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The single action trigger is crisp. The cylinder locks with only barely very light play on each chamber. The barrel locks with no play on the frame. We did not fire this pistol. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box Paperwork and Accessories: This pistol comes with its factory box, owner’s manual, and factory handouts.
Our Assessment: The No.3 American 1st Model, designed by Major George W. Schofield of the 10th Cavalry, represents a notable improvement over the Smith & Wesson No. 3 “American” model. As an army ordnance officer, Schofield’s modifications were aimed at enhancing the revolver’s functionality, particularly for cavalry use. Produced by Smith & Wesson from 1875 to 1877, the U.S. Army adopted this revolver, ordering nearly 8,000 units chambered in the proprietary .45 Schofield cartridge. This firearm saw extensive service, notably by the 4th Cavalry in the Geronimo campaign and by the buffalo soldiers of the 9th and 10th Cavalry. Its use was not limited to the military; the Schofield revolver was also favored by figures such as the James-Younger gang, U.S. Marshal Bill Tilghman, and “Lonesome Charley” Reynolds, Custer’s chief of scouts.
The Schofield revolver was particularly esteemed for its top-break, rapid ejection system, which many horse soldiers considered superior to the 1873 Colt Single Action Army for mounted operations. In the 1880s, surplus Schofields were acquired by the New York gun dealer Schuyler, Hartley & Graham, who modified them by cutting the barrels from 7 to 5 inches and sold many to Wells Fargo & Company for their express agents.
