Action Type: Top-Break Over/Under Shotgun with Single Selective Trigger (mechanical) and Ejectors

Markings:  The left side of the top barrel is marked “MODEL 101 – WINCHESTER – 12 GAUGE – 2 3/4″ / NEW HAVEN, CONN. – U.S.A.”, the right is marked “MADE IN JAPAN”. Under the forend, the left of the top barrel is marked “FULL”, the bottom “MOD.” and each with an ovalled “WP” proof. The bottom of the bottom barrel is marked “WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL”. The bottom of the monoblock is marked “P B 172317” and the bottom of the left locking block is marked “12-2 3/4” in oval. The top of the forend iron is marked “180973”, found again stamped on the inside of the forend. The top tang is marked “K172317”. The receiver, trigger guard, exposed portions of the forend iron and the barrel shoulders have decorative scroll and floral engraving.

Barrel Length: 28” With Ventilated Rib.

Choke: Full over Modified, both fixed.

Sights / Optics: There is an orange bead in a base at the front of the rib and a smaller metal mid-bead. The top of the rib is finely checkered to reduce glare.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece checkered walnut with forend, straight comb, capped semi-pistol grip and black rubber Pachmayr buttpad. The stocks have some scattered minor nicks, scuffs and scratches. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 14.5″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the recoil pad. The pad has light wear at the heel and around the edges, but is still supple. Overall, the stocks are in Fair condition. The forend does not match the receiver.  The forend between the receiver and the bottom metal is cracks all the way through.

Bore Condition: The bores are bright. There is no erosion.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 90% of its metal finish.  There is assembly and operation wear on the action.  There are scuffs and scratches throughout.  The receiver has thinning finish at the bottom edges, continuing onto the forend. There is handling wear on the guard and controls. There are a few other scattered minor marks. The screw heads are lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun is in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The barrels lock up to the receiver with no play. The safety does not engage automatically when the action is opened, but does function properly when engaged manually. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The iconic Model 101 is a shotgun with legendary styling and handling and the unquestionable reliability you expect from Winchester firearms. This example has a 28″ barrel choked Full over Modified. In Very Good condition, this shotgun has wear consistent with light and responsible use, maybe even a trip or two in the field, but still has bright bores and strong mechanics.
