Our Assessment: The Yugo SKS is a version of the Russian SKS (Samozaryadny Karabin sistemy Simonova) rifle that was produced in Yugoslavia. The SKS was designed by Sergei Gavrilovich Simonov in the early 1940s and was produced in the Soviet Union from 1945 to 1958. The SKS was then produced in a number of other countries, including China, Romania, Albania, and Yugoslavia.

The Yugoslavian version of the SKS, known as the M59/66, was produced from 1966 to 1972. It was chambered in 7.62x39mm and had a number of differences from the original Russian SKS, including a grenade launcher sight, a folding bayonet, and a grenade launcher. It was also equipped with a longer, more durable barrel and a modified gas system.

The M59/66 was used by the Yugoslav People’s Army and was also exported to a number of other countries. In the 1980s, a number of these rifles were imported into the United States and became popular with collectors and shooters due to their low cost and reliable design.

Overall, the Yugo SKS is a unique and interesting piece of firearms history that has stood the test of time and remains popular with collectors and shooters today.

This is a great example of a commercially imported SKS 59/66A1.  This SKS boasts an attached 10-round internal box magazine that is loaded in place with stripper clips and hinges at its front so it can be opened to safely unload the rifle or for cleaning.  The rifle is in nice shape with a strong bore and nice metal finish that looks great set in the reddish-blonde beech wood.  There is one thing that is certain – SKS’s are becoming more and more popular in today’s market.  The SKS is one of the top trending firearms today because of the rich multinational history that it and only a few other licensed designs can deliver. After WW2 the design was sold to many Soviet Union allies and the basic SKS model was given minor tweaks by many different countries to create the vast SKS market that we see today.  The SKS of today range in many different assemblies as unique as their originating countries are.  This particular Yugoslavian SKS PAPM59/66A1 is a great find for anyone at entry level shooting or for anyone looking to build that rich collection of firearms.  So add this reliable classic to your collection today!
